3,000 submissions a year, 30 minutes each by hand and about 6 to review and approve with EduMark. Staff time at £30 an hour. How we worked it out
Before you bring your papers.
The short answers. Each one links to the page that goes into detail.
Is AI marking allowed for our qualifications?Who is accountable for the mark
Ofqual’s position is that AI must not be the sole marker of learners’ work. EduMark is built that way: EduMark AI drafts the marks and feedback, and a named assessor confirms the marking. Your moderation and release rules still apply.
Will it change our documents? What gets written, and where
EduMark writes only in the boxes your paper already has: comments, ticks, marks and grades. It never adds a table, row, page or sheet, and nothing a learner wrote is removed or moved. Each attempt’s marks go in that attempt’s own column, and every marked copy is checked before anyone sees it.
Do learners have to change how they work?Word, PDF, Excel or the platform
No. Each learner gets their own copy of your paper. They can work in EduMark or in Word and hand in as they always have, and their answers come back into EduMark with any pictures and tables they added.
How do we know it’s their own work?Invigilation, writing history and integrity checks
Live invigilation records the whole screen and the camera, and writing history keeps every keystroke so a reviewer can replay how an answer was written. EduMark Integrity adds plagiarism and AI-writing checks to marking.
What about resubmissions and moderation?Every attempt, every reviewer
A resubmission is marked in the paper’s resubmission column, not over the first attempt. Moderators and second markers open the same paper, and every change is recorded.
How do we move our papers over?Upload them, nothing retyped
Upload your existing Word, PDF and Excel assessments. EduMark reads each one as it is, so there is nothing to rebuild.
How we worked out the numbersMinutes per submission, staff time and the example centre
We take 30 minutes to mark one written submission by hand, and about 6 minutes for an assessor to review and approve a submission EduMark AI has already marked in the paper. That is 80% less marking time.
The example centre has 500 learners with 6 assessments each: 3,000 submissions a year and 1,200 hours back. At 150 working hours a month that is 8 months of an assessor’s time, and at £30 an hour it is £36,000 of staff time freed up. That is time back, not a cash saving.
The illustrations in the story use example papers. The time it takes to mark depends on your papers, your criteria and how your assessors review.
